I look back with disdain on the one time our high school history teacher asked us to find similarities between the Austrian and the democracy of Attica in Ancient Greece and I said matter-of-factly that both are built on exclusion, that foreigners were equally barred from participation in political life. And I will never forget nor forgive the way she stared at me for like 10 seconds, the silence that followed (because I pointed out the obvious continuities in nationalism), and how smoothly she moved on from it, not even acknowledging the validity of my answer at all.
